Here are some highlights of what will be covered at the workshop:
Building Interpretive Skills through Partnerships Panel
This panel discussion will give a brief overview of the National Association for Interpretation’s Certification & Training Program. Then we will discuss how different agencies and non-profits partner with the program to help build the skills of their interpretive staff and volunteers. The organizations leading the panel discussion will be National Association for Interpretation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, The Butterfly Pavilion, and the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department.
Partnership Real-Life Examples using Education and Outreach Techniques
- Reintroduction of Black-footed ferrets at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area: This effort was a multi-agency collaborative project to help reintroduce this endangered species to the plains north of Fort Collins. Agencies involved included US Fish and Wildlife, City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center. Discover how education and outreach was used to help prepare the public for this historic event.
- Hunting on open space as a resource management tool: When herds of elk took over Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain, Boulder County Parks and Open Space partnered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to come up with a plan to control the elk population and impact to the site. Participate in a hands-on activity that shows how public opinions were heard, how information was shared with visitors, and how a decision was made.
Facilitated Dialogue
Facilitated dialogue is a wonderful technique to guide challenging or controversial conversations using the “arc of dialogue” concept. Increasingly used by the National Park Service and other local interpreters and educators, interpretive facilitation guides participant through conversations that are structured, meaningful, and audience-centered. Facilitated dialogue is quick and easy communication method that connects people to a place and/or topic that you want to discuss without having to develop a formal interpretive program.

NAI Pre-Conference Workshop to be held at CPW Partners in the Outdoors Conference
Are you interested in discovering how you can partner with other organizations to enhance your educational outreach? Many of our organizations have similar goals, and when these goals are sometimes controversial, or difficult for the public to understand, it helps to work together with other to create positive messages.
In the partnership spirit, the Front Range NAI network group has set up a workshop for Wednesday, May 9 in Breckenridge at Beaver Run Resort. That evening, Colorado Parks and Wildlife begins their annual conference that runs through Friday.
Information about the NAI workshop is attached. You do not have to be a member of NAI to attend. The best part–it’s FREE! You do need to register though, and information is provided on the attached flyer. The only cost will be for lunch. AND if you attend the workshop, you get a 20% discount off the cost of the CPW conference if you want to stay and attend.
