COSA Southwest Conservation Corps has Fall Openings!

Southwest Conservation Corps is excited to open several opportunities for fall crew members! Both Durango and Salida are hiring with positions starting in August, plus two individual placement positions in New Mexico and Oklahoma with the USDA Forest Service!

Fall QUEER Chainsaw Crew Member – Durango, CO

August 23, 2021 – November 12, 2021

The goal of this affinity crew is to have a place at work where people with identities that have historically and systematically been dealt a tougher hand can come together to unify, express, wonder, dissolve barriers, and heal, and grow! The LGBTQA2S+ Affinity Crew seeks to create a safe, non-judgmental, and inclusive space for all regardless of gender or sexual identity. We value respect (of names, pronouns, orientation, gender, and philosophies), confidentiality, boundaries (both physical and auditory), and maintaining a safe space for all.

Projects include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.

As an AmeriCorps program participant with the Southwest Conservation Corps, your office is the great outdoors! Each crew consists of 6-7 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for 8 days at a time in either frontcountry (access to your crew vehicle and trailer), or backcountry (hiking all your supplies in with backpacks) locations, in all types of weather conditions. You will work as a member of the crew; perform heavy manual labor, and complete conservation projects using a variety of manual and power tools. You will a participate in environmental education activities. Risk management is of utmost importance, and all procedures must be followed at all times.

USDA Forest Service Resource Assistant Wildlife Technician (2 positions) – Albuquerque, NM OR Elk City, OK or Clayton, NM

Stipend: $12.50/hour

Term: 26 weeks

Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ Individual Placement team and help the US Forest Service carry out its mission of “caring for the land and serving people”. This resource assistant will join the Cibola National Forest and the National Grasslands Wildlife, Fish, and Rare Plants Program. The mission of this program is to facilitate the implementation of multiple use resource projects while striving to protect and enhance wildlife, fish, and rare plant habitat. As part of this mission, it may be necessary to develop project design features within an interdisciplinary setting which aim to mitigate the overall impact of the federal actions on threatened, endangered, and/or Forest Sensitive wildlife, fish, and plant (WFRP) species.

This individual will work directly to support a three-forest effort known as the Tri-Forest Restoration Initiative (Tri-FRI). This initiative plans restoration work across the three northern New Mexico Forests – Carson, Cibola, and Santa Fe. This resource assistant will be involved with performing project clearances for the WFRP department and the Cibola. They will gain direct experience in how federal actions are evaluated by wildlife biologists. They will learn the steps necessary to plan, implement, and document wildlife surveys and how they are incorporated into environmental analyses. The individual will also learn how to evaluate “Habitat Stamp Program” water and habitat developments, how to document needed work and supplies, and how to help write a program of work for next year’s competitive funding efforts. Cross-training and other resources will be available and encouraged.
