The Colorado State Land Board is looking to hire a new Technician role in support of the Recreation leasing program. You’ll work closely with our Recreation Program Manager, district offices, and transactions and records services (TRS) team to help us manage our growing portfolio of recreation leasing opportunities.

What is the State Land Board?

The State Land Board is a constitutionally created agency that manages a $4.4 billion endowment of assets for the intergenerational benefit of Colorado’s K-12 schoolchildren and public institutions. We are the second-largest landowner in Colorado and generate revenue on behalf of beneficiaries by leasing three million surface acres and four million subsurface acres for assorted purposes.

What is the recreation leasing program at the State Land Board?

Unlike other federal or state-owned land, trust land is not publicly accessible unless it is leased for a form of recreation. Our Recreation Program Manager oversees the leasing of state trust land for private recreational use, currently comprising ~400 contracts spanning approximately 400,000 acres of trust lands. We also have a giant lease with Colorado Parks & Wildlife that makes publicly accessible 970,000 acres of trust land for seasonal, limited hunting. But this position will be far more focused on the administration of private recreation lease contracts.

The job opportunity

Under guidance from our Recreation Program Manager and under direct supervision from our Transactions and Records Services Manager, you’ll be transacting the day-to-day business of our recreation program. Here are some details:

  1. Administer recreation leases.

  • Be a fastidious records keeper using digital and paper methodologies.

  • Coordinate transactional components for each recreation leasing opportunity through its contract life cycle, which includes establishing and managing timelines, checklists, and documentation.

  • Be a database guru and process transactional elements for each recreation application and lease.

  • Be the point person for establishing and coordinating recreation lease auctions and obtaining approvals/signatures for recreation leases.

  1. Be customer-focused.

  • Maintain proactive correspondence with lease applicants, existing lessees, and other stakeholders.

  • Respond in a timely manner to incoming inquiries from lease applicants, existing lessees, and other stakeholders.

  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional colleagues at the agency. Partner with our six district offices to manage recreation program inquiries and compatible uses.

  1. Occasionally get your boots dirty, if you wish. This is primarily an administrative position and most of your time will be spent indoors at a desk. That said, you may occasionally have the opportunity to join the Recreation Program Manager on site visits across the state.

  2. And, of course, other duties as assigned. Part of any job is to be flexible and supportive of things that come up unexpectedly.

NOTE: our agency follows a hybrid workplace model and staff are expected to work in the office (located at 1127 Sherman in downtown Denver) a minimum of two days per week. Your individual schedule can be determined between you and your supervisor. Additionally, the orientation and onboarding period may require additional in-office days.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or three years experience in an office environment performing administrative support activities dealing with land use contracts/leases/permits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years experience coordinating outdoor recreation contract/lease/permit approval

  • Two years experience using CRM and land based information databases

  • Proficiency in workplace applications of Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe

  • Strong written and oral communications skills and superior attention to detail
