COSA Agricultural Lease Program Questions

COSA Community –

The Town of Erie has a small but growing Ag lease program for farming and grazing lands we have in our portfolio. For any agencies that also have Ag lease programs, we had a few questions we’d love some feedback on if you were willing to share:

  • For land that is of poor quality/low productivity, do you waive rent fees in exchange for tenants making improvements to the landscape? (i.e. sweat equity, seed purchase, soil amendment purchase, infrastructure improvements, and the like).
  • If so, how are the tenant time and materials priced?
  • Is there a set number of years you would allow this agreement to run, and/or is there a tiered pricing agreement that slides over time as the land transitions into a more productive state?

Many thanks for anyone willing to offer suggestions or feedback.
