The City of Longmont is excited to announce an opening for an experienced and qualified professional to join our team as a Parks and Open Space Ranger I or Parks and Open Space Ranger II (depending on experience level).The primary duty location and focus of this position is a reservoir ranger for Union Reservoir so knowledge of reservoir operations and boating experience is strongly recommended. This full-time, 40-hour-per-week position requires availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays on a four 10s schedule, Wednesday – Saturday.
Union Reservoir is a 736 acre body of water providing many outdoor recreational activities. Originally called Calkins Lake, the reservoir was carved out during the last glacial age and is one of only a few natural lakes in Colorado. In 1903, the Union Ditch Company began drilling a tunnel to release water into the St. Vrain Creek. According to Colorado water law, that made Union a true reservoir. The Reservoir is located approximately 7 miles west of I-25.
City of Longmont Rangers support public outreach and education, municipal code enforcement, emergency response, homelessness outreach, and natural resource protection on Longmont’s Public Lands system. Rangers provide support to multiple City divisions including Police Services, Fire Services, Parks, Recreation & Open Space (PROS), and Water Resources. Rangers contribute parks law enforcement and resource protection expertise to division projects, respond to compliance and safety issues on Parks, Open Space, and utility properties, and support public engagement, volunteer projects, and naturalist interpretive programming. Rangers also act as park and natural resource managers for specific City properties including Union Reservoir Nature Area and Button Rock Preserve.
As limited scope peace officers designated by the City Manager, Rangers address violations of municipal code, conduct investigations, issue warnings and summonses, and support parks law enforcement. Rangers are also trained as wildland firefighters, open water rescuers, or emergency medical responders to support emergency response on City land and reservoirs. Rangers act as liaisons with non-profit organizations engaged in regional conservation work and neighboring land management agencies, including Boulder County Parks & Open Space, US Forest Service, and Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
