We do this through understanding and attending to the needs and values of humans, human society, and culture as they relate to the conservation and enjoyment of the natural environment.

The department is dedicated to the education and involvement of diverse publics in natural resource decisions. HDNR has more than 90 years of collaborative research in parks and protected areas and contributes to informed decision making while conveying a broad based understanding of the ways humans value, use and depend on the natural environment.

Global natural resource management and recreation involves integrated approaches that connect physical and biological sciences through social science frameworks. Natural resource issues are complex and require an understanding of human-natural system interaction to reach effective solutions that sustain livelihoods, nature-based tourism, and the environment.
