The City of Louisville invites Open Space professionals to apply for our Open Space Senior Maintenance Specialist position. This position plays a supervisory role in our Open Space division and is under the direction of the Open Space Superintendent, this position will assist the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department in carrying out the objectives of the Open Space Division as outlined in the Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Comprehensive Master Plan and the Open Space Master Plan. This individual will be responsible for supervising and managing the Open Space Maintenance Team’s full time, seasonal, and contractual employees, as well as creating work plans and vision for the Open Space maintenance team. This individual will also perform work in the planning, maintenance, and construction of all Open Space amenities and trails.

Primary duties will include supervising and managing direct reports; Open Space trail corridor maintenance such as trail edge mowing, trail repair and resurfacing; trash removal and doggie bag dispenser filling; and trailhead/property inspection and upkeep. Secondary duties will include reviewing and leading volunteer and Boulder County Youth Corps maintenance projects, vault toilet cleaning, snow removal, and other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time, benefited position that works 40 hours per week.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Make recommendations and oversee the approved annual work plan for the Open Space Maintenance team.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the full time Open Space Maintenance Technician(s)
  1. Train staff on equipment, maintenance tasks, and safety protocols.
  2. Coordinate and oversee staff responsible for trail and facility maintenance tasks.
  3. Lead Maintenance team trail construction and social trail restoration projects.

Hire, train, and supervise seasonal employee(s). Provide updates and information as requested to the Open Space Advisory Board. Responsible for field operations and maintenance of the City’s 700 acres of land and 32 miles of Open Space trails. Responsible for trail maintenance, trail edge mowing, trail construction, trail mapping, and assisting with trail planning. Routinely fill doggie bag dispensers, empty trash receptacles, and clean one vault toilet. Inspect and maintain all open space amenities including trailhead facilities, benches, pedestrian bridges, signs, kiosks, landscape beds, fences, etc. Coordinate, manage, and monitor contracted services with a high priority being trail construction, vault toilet emptying, amenity installation, and repair projects. Assist in coordination, review, and inspection of Access and Use Permits for projects led by others impacting Open Space lands, trails, and amenities. Operation of tractors, skid steer, backhoe, pick-up trucks, mowers, trailers, string line trimmers, chainsaw, ATV, backpack sprayer, and other equipment. May be required to make minor repairs or adjustments in the field. Coordinate, lead, and assist with volunteer projects. Collaborate and assist in developing the Boulder County Youth Corps annual work plan. Act as field lead for maintenance projects. Coordinate water conveyance from ditches and pipelines to fill the Warembourg fishing pond, Hecla Reservoir, and provide water to farm tenant. Maintain records and run calculations to determine water usage. Prepare preliminary budget for Open Space maintenance projects. Remove/Prune trees and vegetation obstructing trail use and visibility. Assess, coordinate with Forestry, and assist with removal of hazardous trees and fallen branches as needed. Plant, prune, and maintain landscape beds. Plow and remove snow on trails, parking lots and sidewalks. Inventory, organize, and order supplies/materials needed for specific day-to-day maintenance and repair activities. Assist with Natural Resource management activities including native restoration noxious weed control, and wildlife management. Coordinate, manage, and assist with City programs and processes such as the Memorial Bench Program, marketing, and public outreach. This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Three (3) years of full time experience in Open Space field maintenance.
  • Experience at senior or lead Open Space worker level and supervisor of seasonal staff.
  • The Colorado Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s License preferred (or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Recreation Management, or related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to review and determine accuracy of timesheets, invoices, resolve billing errors, and submit invoices for proper payment using standard City of Louisville procedures for self and direct reports.
  • Skill in planning, scheduling, and supervising work of direct reports
  • Ability to administer and oversee contractual work.
  • Ability to think critically and make independent adjustments in the field as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals including the general public, city staff, contractors, volunteers, boards, and children
  • Ability to collect, interpret and manage data
  • Experience using GIS/Arc View or Arc Map, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Power Point preferred
  • Ability to work within budget parameters
  • Knowledge and willingness to apply occupational safety rules and practices
  • Knowledge and experience in the safe operations of heavy equipment, hand tools, and trucks in rough, uneven, or slippery ground conditions
  • Knowledge and experience with routine equipment maintenance
  • Working knowledge and experience implementing:
  1. trail maintenance and construction
  2. herbicide applications
  3. landscape principles and practices
  4. ecological principals and Natural Resource management techniques
  5. noxious weed and native vegetation identification
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions

Special License, Registration, or Certificate Required:

  • Current Colorado Driver License with in good standing with no major violations for the past three (3) years.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Candidates will be required to complete and pass a pre-placement physical as well as driving record, reference, and background checks prior to employment.
