Colorado Fourteeners Initiative is currently recruiting trail work and restoration professionals for our upcoming 2024 field season. We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working seasonal staff crew leaders & crew members to complete these projects over the summer and early fall, 2024.
Applicants must be available to work from May 20ththrough September 29th, 2024
Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, December 29th, 2023
3-5 years minimum trail work experience preferred for Crew Leader positions
1-2 years minimum trail work experience preferred for Crew Member positions
Mount Elbert, Black Cloud Route – Crew Leaders:
This will mark the second and final season on the Black Cloud route up Colorado’s highest peak. The crew will primarily be working on a re-route above tree line, at 13,000ft. The objective is to install a more sustainable section of trail through a portion of currently existing fall line trail that is badly eroded. Additionally, some maintenance will be done to harden and stabilize portions of the existing trail that will not be re-routed. The work will be mostly new trail construction using full bench construction techniques, with some heavy maintenance on the existing trail. New full bench construction (70%), rock work (15%), and trail restoration (15%).
Mount Shavano – Crew Leaders & Members:
2024 will mark the third year of the two separate major trail re-route projects. One will focus on full bench construction below tree line and the second will focus on building new trail above tree line, around 13,000 ft, with a variety of different stone structures. Both re-routes will be completed by two separate CFI crews with the low crew having some additional support from a Conservation Corps crew. Both crews will be backcountry camping for the duration of the season while on hitch. Each crew will function completely independent of each other for the full duration of the season. This is two different projects happening simultaneously on the same peak.
Adopt a Peak Teams – Crew Leaders, Members & Interns:
Each Adopt crew is made up of one leader, two crew members and one intern. Each Adopt-a-Peak Crew will be travelling to and performing maintenance on approximately 7 different 14ers over the course of the season. Maintaining the highest priority, and most damaged sections of trail. These crews will work both as a 2-4 person unit without volunteers and with volunteers in which they will supervise and facilitate trail work projects. Crews will host volunteer groups on 1-4 day trail maintenance projects across the state. When not working with volunteers, they will perform heavy maintenance and reconstruction on designated routes. Experience and/or the desire to work with volunteers is required.
Internship positions are not expected to have any trail work experience. Hiking, backpacking, camping, manual labor, and other outdoor related experiences are helpful.
