Community invited to share input on South Shore Site Management Plan at Open Houses on July 18 and July 23

Boulder Reservoir is changing, and now is the time to provide your ideas about what you would like to see for the future of the reservoir. The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department will host two upcoming opportunities to add your voice to the conversation about the Boulder Reservoir South Shore Site Management plan. Both meetings will have the same content, and comments will be collected and compiled from both opportunities.

Please join us to be a part of the process on either:

  • Tuesday, July 18, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., East Boulder Community Center/East Boulder Senior Center, Flatirons Room, 5660 Sioux Drive, or
  • Sunday, July 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Boulder Reservoir, 5565 N. 51st St.

For the July 23 open house, the reservoir will waive its entry fees between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for community members who would like to experience Boulder Reservoir and provide feedback to staff. Just mention the site management open house at the entry gate and stop by one of our stations (swimming beach or boat launch) to chat with staff about your ideas.

There will not be a formal presentation at these events; however, information boards will be on display so you can visit any time during the designated times to learn more about the project and discuss with staff. City staff and consultants will be available to answer any questions and talk through any new ideas. In particular, staff seeks your thoughts on:

  • Development or redevelopment of buildings
  • Use of land and water
  • Programs and services offered
  • Trails
  • Seasonal use and length of use
  • Review of fees, policies and regulations
  • Reasons you may not be visiting the reservoir

The South Shore Site Management Plan is a long-term plan for the Boulder Reservoir. The South Shore of the Boulder Reservoir consists of roughly 76 acres and is the location of the most intensive active recreational uses at the reservoir. In addition to hosting 300,000 annual visitors, the South Shore is also the site of roughly 35 annual large events, including the Boulder Ironman and Boulder Triathlon.

Following these open house events, the Parks Planning Division will develop concept design drafts for the reservoir’s South Shore, incorporating comments from the community, technical studies, consultants and staff. Additional opportunities for public feedback on the in-progress plan will be held in Fall 2017. The final plan is expected to be presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for final approval in Spring 2018.

The community is also invited to take a fun, informative one-minute reservoir quiz by midnight July 23, 2017, to be entered into a free drawing for a chance to win gift cards to local businesses. Additional drawing entries will be available at the open houses. Take the quiz online at bit.ly/2t8UJgV.
