COSA Dog bag dispenser question – seeking feedback from other Colorado tra il and land management agencies

The Town of Erie is currently conducting research to understand how other agencies across Colorado are addressing the provision of dog bag dispenser stations in their parks, open spaces, trails, and dog parks. Erie has been in the process of transitioning our traditional dog bag dispenser stations to stations that are stocked by the public with excess plastic bags. However, with the recent change in Colorado law, which now charges customers a price per bag, we’ve unfortunately observed that resident-stocked stations are not being replenished. This issue has become particularly apparent in our Town-maintained dog park, which was designed with "supply your own" stations. We would greatly appreciate any information anyone out there is willing to share on this topic. Additionally, we’re open to sharing any feedback we receive through this inquiry.

  • Does your agency supply dog bags in all parks maintained by your agency?
  • Do you supply dog bags along trail corridors/open spaces maintained by your agency?
  • Do you supply dog bags in any dog parks maintained by your agency?
  • If no, how does your agency deal with the accumulation of dog feces that is not cleaned by dog owners? Do you enact closures? Do you post any signage regarding this?

If your agency supplies dog bags:

  • Are they serviced and stocked using in-house staff or contractors?
  • If contractors are utilized, who do you use?
  • Does your agency utilize any sponsorships for dog bag stations?
  • Does your agency have any design or construction specifications that guide how many dog bag stations are provided in a park or the distances between stations along trail systems?

Please provide any additional challenges that your agency may be dealing with regarding dog bag stations. Responses can be sent directly to Mike McGill at: mmcgill@erieco.gov

Much appreciated!
