Job Summary
The Senior Planner for Urban Forestry is a key role focused on advancing the vision for urban forest growth and enhancing community resilience through the implementation of the Urban Forest Strategic Plan. This position is responsible for conducting in-depth research and analysis on urban forestry challenges, developing policies to increase and protect the urban canopy, and ensuring a balanced approach to urban development, prioritizing tree preservation. The Senior Planner works on both short- and long-term strategic initiatives to mitigate heat, improve climate resilience, and foster equitable access to green spaces for all community members.
In this role, the Senior Planner will lead and manage city-wide, interdisciplinary projects aimed at expanding urban forestry efforts, while also pursuing grant funding to support additional climate initiatives. They will serve as a key advisor on urban forestry issues to various city departments, boards, commissions, and City Council. Public outreach and education are also vital components of the role, with the planner helping to engage the community and raise awareness about the importance of trees in urban spaces.
The Senior Planner will also oversee the management of project budgets, ensuring costs remain within established limits, and provide leadership and mentorship to classified and temporary staff. They will work collaboratively with other departments and agencies, serving on teams dedicated to urban forest management and related planning efforts. Additionally, this position involves hands-on management of grant opportunities from start to finish, along with evaluating development plans and agreements to help improve tree preservation and protection policy. Hybrid workspaces are an option, with a minimum of three days per week in person.
To be successful in this role, candidates must possess a deep knowledge of urban forestry, environmental science, urban ecology, natural resource management, and/or landscape architecture, with strong skills in project management, research, and public engagement. Candidates should have at least five years of relevant experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity, as well as the ability to obtain an ISA Certified Arborist certification. A valid Driver’s License is required. Advanced qualifications, such as a Colorado-licensed Landscape Architect, or an AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) certification from the American Planning Association are preferred but not required.
