COSA Trail counters – accounting for out-and-back/return traffic

Hi COSA community – With helpful input from many of you, we here in Erie have selected a trail counter system to start tracking visitor usage at various open space and trail locations in town.

For those of you with experience managing trail counter systems, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing any tips you use to account for sites which have some percentage of return traffic (i.e. people on an out-and-back bike ride vs. someone who rides a loop and only passes by once). We have a few sites with pinch points where we know close to 100% of the traffic is one way but are struggling to figure out how to account for sites that have return traffic potential.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
